Clinical Study of the Permanent Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Procedure with Artefill Confirms a Safe, Low-Cost Alternative to Surgery

March 22, 2010 |

Rhinoplasty continues to be one of the most requested cosmetic procedures.  It is also one of the most difficult to perform. A slight alternation to the nose can dramatically enhance a patient’s appearance, improving facial balance and proportion.  While traditionally, Rhinoplasty required surgery, now there are non-surgical solutions.  The Non-Surgical Nose Job (otherwise known as Non Surgical Rhinoplasty or Injection Rhinoplasty) can avoid some of the pitfalls and risks associated with traditional surgery.

Surgery can take up to a year and sometimes longer for the outcome to be fully realized.  While most operations are safely performed with good results, complications can occur. These include life threatening anesthesia complications, as well as permanent breathing problems. Cosmetic complications are also possible, such as collapse of the nasal cartilage leading to unnatural appearing dips in the nasal bridge (so called saddle nose deformity) and uneven scarring leading to an asymmetric nose. The Non Surgical Nose Job is becoming increasingly popular because it avoids these complications and because it so much more affordable than surgery. With the introduction of permanent fillers, the popularity of this non-surgical procedure is expected to increase dramatically.

The Non-Surgical Nose Job candidate

Having performed more than 1000 Non-Surgical Nose Job procedures using temporary fillers (mostly Radiesse), it is clear that this is a procedure that successfully meets the needs of many rhinoplasty candidates. When performed by an experienced aesthetic specialist, the Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty procedure can effectively: camouflage bumps on the bridge of the nose; lift drooping nasal tips for a straight profile; raise the height of and better define the nasal bridge for people with a broad or low bridge, and correct natural or post surgical asymmetry of the tip or bridge.

Permanent fix or a temporary trial – it’s your choice

While many patients are absolutely certain of the changes they would like to see in their nose, some are more ambivalent and would prefer a trial run.  Fortunately, with fillers, both options are available.

Radiesse is an excellent filler. It is safe, non allergenic and provides natural, effective volumization. It lasts about a year in the tissues. When the effect wears off, however, my patients have been asking for a permanent option. When Artefill was approved by the FDA in 2006, I began to use it perform the Non Surgical Rhinoplasty procedure.

With Artefill, the cosmetic result of the Non-Surgical Nose Job will persist just as long as the result of surgical rhinoplasty.  We are presently seeing many more patients who were once considering surgery.  Now that we can offer a permanent non-surgical solution, patients are eager to avoid the pain, downtime, risk and cost, associated with surgery.

Based on my treatment of over 200 patients using Artefill, I have initiated a study to document the safety and efficacy that I have been observing. This study is designed to document the efficacy of Artefill in correcting a large variety of nasal cosmetic issues and how the correction lasts over time.

Additional facial sculpting alternatives

Artefill is also very useful as an alternative for surgical chin or cheek augmentation using implants.  The Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation and Non-Surgical Cheek Augmentation procedures provide permanent volume correction without surgery. The augmentation is a bit more subtle than what can be achieved with a silicone implant, but a subtle and natural appearance is what people are looking for these days.  When using Artefill, it is best to be very conservative.  These procedures should be performed over three or more visits so that the result is always perfect and never overfilled.

A Permanent Non-Surgical Nose Job generally costs $2,000 – less than one quarter of the cost of traditional Rhinoplasty surgery.
