Choosing the Right Wrinkle Filler
Science has allowed us to all age a bit more gracefully, thanks to the invention of a variety of wrinkle-reducing and wrinkle-filling treatments. But choosing the appropriate wrinkle filler can be confusing, as patients and their providers must consider a number of factors, including treatment cost, effectiveness, and longevity. In this article, we’ll provide an overview of some of today’s most popular wrinkle treatment options and the benefits of each.
Juvederm®, Juvederm-XC®, Restylane™, Restylane-L™, Perlane™, and Perlane-L™
For patients interested in filling in “laugh lines,” and fine lines around the mouth, Hyaluronic Acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane offer a safe and effective solution. Some of today’s most popular wrinkle fillers, this trio is also effective at correcting facial lines and scars. In addition to their superior wrinkle filling properties, Restylane, Perlane and Juvederm are also often used to enhance lip and cheek size and contour, as well as creating a more symmetrical facial appearance.
Specifically, Juvederm Ultra and Restylane have shown the best results in reducing fine lines and wrinkles, as well as increasing lip volume. Juvederm Ultra Plus and Perlane, which have heavier molecular weights than the previously mentioned fillers, tend to do a better job of filling in deeper facial lines and increasing the volume and contour of cheeks.
The FDA recently approved new formulations of these products that are pre-mixed with the anesthetic Lidocaine. Juvederm-XC, Restylane-L and Perlane-L provide the same wrinkle correcting effects with less injection pain.
How long do they last?
Hyaluronic Acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane and Perlane typically last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, though individual results may vary. With regular use, these types of fillers stimulate the production of new collagen, which, over time, can result in a gradual but permanent decrease in the number and severity of wrinkles, lines and scars.
Radiesse
Radiesse offers patients a viable solution for correcting a variety of cosmetic concerns. For patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their hands, Radiesse has been shown to effectively restore volume in the hands, hiding the bulging, unsightly veins and reducing the skin laxity that tends to develop as we age.
For male or female patients looking for a way to correct their laugh lines or nasolabial folds, Radiesse has been found to be an extremely effective treatment, especially when combined with the use of a Hyaluronic Acid filler. In these situations, Radiesse is injected first to reduce the depth of the facial fold, then a lighter filler like Juvederm or Restylane is added in order to reduce the appearance of any residual wrinkling.
How long does it last?
Though it varies depending on the individual, Radiesse treatments typically last between 8 and 12 months. However, Radiesse has been proven to be extremely effective at stimulating the formation of collagen. Therefore, it is believed that patients may see a permanent reduction in the appearance of facial lines well after the initial Radiesse treatment.
Sculptra
For patients who may be experiencing deep facial lines, or who want to add volume to a gaunt face, Sculptra offers a longer-lasting solution that provides subtle results over time. A poly-L-lactic acid, Sculptra is typically administered as a series of three treatments over a time period of a few months.
Sculptra works by replacing lost facial collagen, correcting the appearance of deep facial folds and wrinkles that can result from aging.
How long does it last?
Results from Sculptra injections have been shown to last up to two years, though as with any wrinkle solution, individual results will vary.
