Job-hunting Baby Boomer Men Turning to Botox, Injectable Facial Fillers

October 20, 2010 |

“Many men in the job market-as well as those who are employed-feel they’re competing with younger workers,” says Chicago-area board-certified plastic surgeon and author Allan Parungao, MD, FACS.

“That’s why it’s no surprise that more Baby Boomer men are turning to non-surgical cosmetic treatments to look younger and help stay competitive in the job market,” says Dr. Parungao.

Though the number of cosmetic procedures performed on women decreased more than 3% from 2008 to 2009, men’s procedures increased 8%, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In that time, men received 14.5% more BOTOX® treatments and 46.1% more hyaluronic acid dermal filler treatments such as Juvéderm.

“Men are interested in improving their looks, but they’re looking for affordable treatments with little or no downtime,” Dr. Parungao explains. “Fortunately, there are a number of non-surgical procedures that are made to order.”

“The frown lines between my eyebrows were making me look mean,” says “Frank,” a 51-year-old Chicago financial executive.

“These days, when everyone is staring at their iPhones, BlackBerries and computer screens, frown lines are becoming a problem area for more people,” Dr. Parungao acknowledges. “The lines that form in the glabella-the space between the eyebrows and above the nose-are the cumulative result of muscle movement and the passage of time.

“BOTOX® gets rid of frown lines by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that would otherwise signal the muscles between the eyebrows to contract,” Dr. Parungao explains. “A treatment typically lasts about three months, though this varies depending on how fast each patient metabolizes BOTOX®. In Frank’s case, a single treatment lasts nine months or longer.

“Botox is very effective at smoothing out wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle action,” says Dr. Parungao. “Other facial wrinkles are caused by a loss of volume in the skin. These wrinkles can easily be treated by soft-tissue facial fillers such as Juvéderm.”

Frank, like many men over 40, noticed that the lines from the nose to the corners of his mouth, known medically as the nasolabial folds, were beginning to deepen, making him look older. “He was an excellent candidate for Juvéderm,” says Dr. Parungao.

“Juvéderm is a smooth-consistency injectable gel made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin,” Dr. Parungao explains. “Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin by retaining water like a sponge, absorbing more than 1,000 times its weight. This helps increase the skin’s volume and density for a more youthful appearance.

“And now Juvéderm treatments are more comfortable,” says Dr. Parungao. “Juvéderm XC contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic that instantly numbs the treatment area, eliminating the need for an extra set of anesthetic injections.

“Juvéderm XC treatments take only 15 minutes because there’s no waiting up to half an hour for separate anesthetic injections to take effect,” he adds. “And Juvéderm is the only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved by the FDA to last up to one year from initial treatment.”

“BOTOX and Juvéderm allow me to maintain a more youthful appearance,” says Frank. “It helps from a self-esteem perspective to know I’m looking more friendly than angry.”
