Nominate a doc-entrepreneur
June 8, 2009
Modern Physician, Modern Healthcare’s sister publication, is now accepting nominations for its second annual Physician Entrepreneur of the Year awards program. The award recognizes physicians who have made their mark on the business side of healthcare by introducing successful new products or services to the industry, or by successfully leading or managing businesses serving the industry.
An increasing number of doctors own their own hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers or diagnostic facilities. Many are launching their own managed-care plans. And still others are designing their own medical products or services and taking them to market. The Physician Entrepreneur of the Year award captures that growing business spirit in the medical community.
To be eligible for the award, a candidate must meet three criteria. The nominee must:
- Hold a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.
- Own in whole or in part a current business serving the healthcare industry; or lead or manage a current business serving the healthcare industry.
- Be able to demonstrate the financial or market success of that business.
To apply for the award, a nominee or supporting organization must submit the following materials:
- A cover letter of no more than three pages in length that explains the business and candidate’s role in that business.
- The candidate’s resume, CV or biography.
- Reports or documents demonstrating the financial or market success of that business.
- A color photo of the candidate.
An editorial review board consisting of Modern Physician senior editors will evaluate the submissions with the assistance of an independent accounting firm, which will review the submitted financial documents and reports for accuracy.
The submission deadline for this year’s awards program is July 17. Modern Physician will announce and profile the Physician Entrepreneur of the Year for 2009 in the Sept. 14 issue. The announcement and profile will also appear in the Sept. 14 issue of Modern Healthcare. In addition, this year’s recipient will be honored at the annual meeting of the Physician Hospitals of America Sept. 24-26 in New Orleans.
Last year’s program drew 28 nominees with Adam Singer, founder, chairman, CEO and chief medical officer of IPC-The Hospitalist Co., being chosen as Modern Physician’s Physician Entrepreneur of the Year for 2008. The 27 other nominees automatically are eligible for this year’s competition unless they expressly withdraw their nomination from consideration.
Nomination materials may be sent to David Burda, editor, Modern Physician, 360 N. Michigan Ave., Chicago, Ill., 60601. Material may be submitted electronically to dburda@modernhealthcare.com or moddoc@crain.com.
Per editorial policy, all submitted materials become the property of Modern Physician. The editorial review board is solely responsible for making the final determination of the award recipient.
