Plastic Surgery – New Year, New You?

January 3, 2013 |
Plastic surgery is no longer the taboo subject it once was. Formerly a back street business, it’s now a booming industry frequented by both men and women. Openly discussed among friends, it’s viewed as not only socially acceptable but within some social circles as an essential self enhancement.
Today’s men and women are increasingly image conscious and, therefore, many are willing to go beyond contemplation by taking the plunge into the cosmetic pool of youth. With the New Year beginning, could it be time for you to join the ever expanding circle of the surgically enhanced, or do your reservations on the whole issue leave you teetering with uncertainly?
There are now many procedures that can produce superior results without succumbing to the surgeon’s knife. Dr. Makki is a senior consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Plastic Surgicentre in Doha, and has over 18 years experience in plastic surgery. He explains that non invasive treatments are incredibly popular and that procedures are a different prospect today given new developments in plastic surgery.
“Nowadays the trend is to do less invasive things. If we compare today with ten years back, the same surgery has become less invasive, you recover much quicker and the down time is less.” He points out that some previously invasive procedures have been re categorized as non invasive. “Liposuction is now non invasive. The patient can come in the morning and stay for one hour then go back to work. We do it all under local anaesthetic in a localized area with a tiny needle to take the fat out.” Even the more invasive tummy tuck requires a much decreased recovery time. “We can do it and the patient can go home the same day or the next day and they are back to normal within two weeks. It’s much less invasive now and the recovery is quicker,” he states.
Proof that plastic surgery is popular in Qatar is evidenced by the 18,000 registered patients at Plastic Surgicentre, and this is an ever growing market. According to Dr. Makki, new people are registering every day and they are imminently moving to bigger premises. The most popular non invasive treatments being requested by the masses are Botox, dermal fillers and laser hair removal.
We take a look at just what these procedures entail:
Botox
Botox is primarily used to treat facial wrinkles such as the central frown line, crow’s feet and other expression lines. It works by reducing the activity of the muscles that create wrinkles, with tiny quantities of the toxin being injected directly into the muscles. The number of injections needed varies.
