Rhinoplasty with No Surgery, No Down-Time and No Anaesthetic: The Newest Frontier in Anti-Aging

April 9, 2010 |

Turning to cosmetic surgery as an anti-aging tool is not unusual. But rhinoplasty, or a “nose job”, is not traditionally an anti-aging procedure. New non-surgical rhinoplasties, performed with injectable filler, are changing that.

As people age their nose droops slightly. It can be “perked up” with injectable filler, giving the  face a more youthful look. Youth and health are closely linked and a new study shows nearly 3 out of 4 Americans view health as a symbol of personal success.

According to a new Manning, Selvage & Less survey conducted by Opinion Research Corporation, 72% of Americans say that being physically healthy is a major symbol of success for them, personally. The survey polled over 1,000 adults. A surprising 91% said they would rather be described as healthy than wealthy. The American survey concluded that “Health Esteem” is a new status symbol.

With youth and health so closely linked, a nose that gives a more youthful look can also bring a healthy look. This is true for both women and men. Health and youth may be bigger factors in raising self-esteem than sheer beauty. New techniques make the anti-aging nose easier to achieve.

In spite of the recent recession, the American Society for Plastic Surgery (A.S.A.P.S.) reports only a 2% decline in cosmetic procedures from 2008 to 2009. That not only illustrates the importance that patients place on such procedures, but is a sign of the ease and affordability of the new injectable procedures.

Dr. Oakley Smith is Surgeon-in-Chief in the Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery — at Toronto East General Hospital, practicing in plastic surgery of the nose.

Dr. Smith started doing non-surgical nose jobs 20 years ago, using silicon. Today, he only uses soft tissue fillers such as Juvederm and Restylene. “I always start with temporary filler”, he says, “never permanent”. Dr. Smith is one of the first, in Canada, using the new Botox, Xeomin, cosmetically, with excellent results on both men and women. He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Oakley Smith performs 9% of all rhinoplasties, or “nose jobs” and 20% of the complex nasal reconstruction in Ontario That is believed to be more than any other single surgeon.

Smith warns that, to minimize the risk of poor results patients must do their homework and seek out a board-certified surgeon with specialized training and experience. Dr. Smith is at the forefront of the latest in rhinoplasty innovations and has designed instruments as well as new techniques and procedures for ensuring the best rhinoplasty outcome possible.

Non-invasive cosmetic surgery procedures are a common, affordable practice for many women and men. Still, the cosmetic procedure that is probably the most-desired has remained a major surgical procedure — until recently. Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, is now available in Toronto as a non-surgical, no-anaesthetic procedure, with no “down time” for recovery and no tell-tale signs. A non-surgical nose job takes about 15 minutes, can be watched and guided by the patient in a mirror, and the results can be “test-driven” and adjusted as needed.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is an injectable procedure that is a natural progression from the cosmetic procedures that use dermal filler to augment lips, lift the forehead or brows, and enhance the cheeks or chin. Dr. Oakley Smith is one of the first to make this procedure available in Canada. It has been available in the U.S. for several years and is believed to have been created in Europe, where most cosmetic dermal filler materials originated. Dr. Smith provides a full array of injectable cosmetic procedures to achieve the desired result. “Used in combination, they can enhance each other”, he says. “Rhinoplasty is not always a stand-alone solution”.

“Injectable rhinoplasty isn’t for everyone”, Dr. Smith cautions, noting that it is not a replacement for conventional surgery in every case. But, for many, the ease and speed are very appealing, as is the average cost of a quarter that of traditional rhinoplasty. But, it is not suitable for noses that need size reduction, being best-suited to correcting bumps on the bridge, and mildly crooked or slightly asymmetric noses. However, when it comes to large noses, Dr. Smith says filler, in some cases, can still solve the problem. “Just by camouflaging a bump or making a crooked nose straight, the nose will appear smaller”, he explains. It is also sometimes used to perfect or apply finishing touches following surgical rhinoplasty. Injecting dermal fillers into the nose requires a high level of skill as well as a thorough understanding of nasal structures and soft tissues. Dr. Smith warns, to minimize the risk of poor results patients must do their homework and seek out a board-certified surgeon with specialized training and experience.

Dr. Smith uses the latest array of fillers including Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Artsense and Bio Aclamid for augmenting cheeks, chin and lifting the brow, and reducing nasal labial folds and wrinkles. These procedures are done alone or in combination to create harmony of the face. He also uses revolumizers to fill in facial hallows. Dr. Smith is also one of only a few doctors in Canada using the new Botox called Xeomin for cosmetic use.

Dr. Smith, a facial plastic surgeon and reconstructive surgeon, is Surgeon-in-Chief in the Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery at Toronto East General Hospital. He is also an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Smith trained under Dr. Calvin Johnson, at Tulane University in New Orleans. Johnson is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on surgery of the nose. Dr. Smith is at the forefront of the latest in rhinoplasty innovations and has designed instruments as well as new techniques and procedures for ensuring the best rhinoplasty outcome possible.
